About Mazar-i-Sharif
Mazar-i-Sharif, meaning 'Noble Shrine,' is Afghanistan's fourth-largest city and a place of profound spiritual significance. The city is dominated by the magnificent Blue Mosque (Rawze-e-Sharif), believed by many to be the burial place of Ali ibn Abi Talib. The shrine's stunning blue and turquoise tilework, white marble courtyards, and soaring minarets create one of Central Asia's most beautiful sacred spaces. Each spring, the city hosts Afghanistan's largest Nowruz celebrations, when tens of thousands gather to raise the Janda (religious flag) and celebrate the Persian New Year.
